Project overview

In working with CAA and Qualcomm Snapdragon, I led the development and participated in the successful deployment of Pose Position — a virtual photobooth app for the Scuderia Ferrari F1 team at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix in Monza!

The Pose Position photobooth was designed to offer F1 fans an immersive experience where they could take photos with their favorite Scuderia Ferrari drivers, like Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. The interactive kiosk, powered by a large touchscreen, allowed users to capture a moment with the digitally superimposed drivers and instantly share the picture on social media platforms.

Features

  1. User-Friendly Interface:
    • The intuitive touchscreen interface was designed to ensure a smooth and engaging experience for fans of all ages, with clear prompts and feedback during the photo-taking process.
    • The app supported localization for English, Italian, and Spanish, catering to the diverse groups of people attending the race and enhancing accessibility.
  2. Augmented Reality Photo Experience:
    • Users could stand in front of the kiosk, and using the live camera feed, they were guided to position themselves next to a life-sized digital overlay of a Ferrari F1 driver.
  3. Instant Social Media Sharing:
    • After taking a photo, users had the option to instantly share their picture via email or social media, making it a memorable and shareable experience.

Technical Implementation

  • Unity: The core application was built in Unity, leveraging its robust tools for real-time rendering and user interface creation.
  • Azure Kinect: The Azure Kinect camera was utilized for its depth-sensing capabilities and precise body tracking, allowing for enhanced image composition.
  • Cloud Integration: The app included cloud-based features for instant photo processing and sharing, enabling a seamless user experience even with high foot traffic.

Deployment and Impact

The photobooth was deployed at the iconic Autodromo Nazionale Monza, one of the most prestigious circuits in the Formula 1 calendar. Over the race weekend, hundreds of fans interacted with the app, creating and sharing memorable photos with their favorite Scuderia Ferrari drivers. Even the Ferrari drivers themselves enjoyed posing with... well, themselves, and shared the experience on their official Scuderia Ferrari Instagram account! The successful implementation of Pose Position showcased how cutting-edge technology can enhance fan engagement and provide unique digital experiences in live event settings.

Key Takeaways

Leading this project allowed me to:

  • Gain hands-on experience with Azure Kinect and its SDK for body tracking and image processing.
  • Develop an application optimized for performance on a Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered kiosk.
  • Collaborate closely with stakeholders, including CAA, Qualcomm, and Ferrari, to deliver a polished, high-impact user experience.

Conclusion

Pose Position was a standout project in my portfolio that exemplifies my ability to lead the development of interactive applications at large-scale events. It was thrilling to see fans' excitement as they interacted with the app and shared their photos across social media, spreading the Scuderia Ferrari spirit at the heart of the Italian Grand Prix. 🏁
